Hong Kong's countryside lies in dramatic contrast to the hectic city and nowhere is this more obvious than on one of its many tranquil hiking trails. The two best-known treks are the Hong Kong Trail and the Dragon’s Back. Both provide spectacular views and end in a perfect spot for a well-earned lunch. You can start the Hong Kong Trail just behind Parkview apartments and after a steep climb up to the top of Jardine’s Lookout, you will begin winding your way down Mount Butler towards the reservoir. The trail then meanders around the resevoir at a fairly easy pace and finally takes you to the road, from where it is a five-minute bus ride into Stanley.
The Dragon’s Back starts on Shek O Road and ends up in Big Wave Bay. Winding north to south, you pass through a tropical forest before climbing up to a coastal ridge providing panoramic views of the South Island. Finally, it drops down to Big Wave Bay, where you can enjoy lunch in the beach cafe.
