During rush hour, the MTR is the quickest way to get around the city. Tickets are bought from a machine or the booth in the station and maps are extremely clear and self explanatory. The stations often have multiple exits, which lead you into a rabbit warren of underground tunnels to different parts of an area, so upon arrival at your destination on the station maps (which have plenty of landmarks for guidance) and ensure you take the right exit. If you’re in Hong Kong for longer than a few weeks and plan on using the MTR frequently, it is worth getting an Octopus card, which allows you to pre-pay for journeys on the MTR, buses and ferries in bulk. Octopus cards can be bought for a deposit of HK$50 at any MTR station.
