Company vision

With a passion for developing unique and inspiring properties, Philip Morais launched CHI Residences in 2007. His vision was to create a luxury home away from home for chic and savvy travellers. Applying over three decades of experience in the hospitality and property development industries, he sought to take serviced accommodation to a new level, providing all the luxury and service of a five-star hotel with inspired design and personal touches that provide CHI’s guests with their own unique urban retreat.

The first property under the CHI Residences brand was in West Kowloon, providing a relaxing oasis right in the heart of one of Hong Kong’s most exciting urban areas. Focusing on every aspect of a guests’ needs, even the air quality was considered and an air purifier, which filters oxygen was installed in each apartment, a finishing touch that has subsequently become a signature feature in all CHI Residences’ Hong Kong properties.

Drawing on the success of this property, CHI has launched further serviced accommodation in Hong Kong and a five star dive resort in Taveuni, Fiji - Garden Island Resort, which all provide its guests with a luxury home away from home.

Philip D. Morais

Chairman – CHI Residences

Hong Kong born of Macanese parents who arrived in Hong Kong in the late forties, Philip D. Morais was educated entirely in Hong Kong, from primary school through to a degree at the Hong Kong Polytechnic. Philip started his career with HSBC. He later worked at a Canadian Investments company and then a Swiss company where he focused on mutual funds.

In 1975, Philip bought his first property and formed his own company thus finding his niche. He has since consulted for leading groups, including Jardine Matheson.  Philip’s keen expertise in real estate developed over many years of working in the property business of Hong Kong and the Philippines.

Having developed a diversified portfolio of properties in Hong Kong in the 1980’s, he saw opportunity in the creation of serviced apartments. For expatriates coming to enjoy the fruits of the booming economy at the time and needing short term accommodation, only hotel accommodation was available. Philip filled this niche area when he founded Shama serviced apartments, building up his portfolio to a total of 250 apartments. In March 2006, Philip sold his share in the extremely successful Shama brand to Morgan Stanley.

In 2007, together with his children, he established CHI International, a luxury Asia-wide hospitality company that manages a range of stylish properties. CHI International now owns and operates a boutique luxury resort in Taveuni, Fiji – Garden Island Resort and modern serviced residences in the multicultural cities of Hong Kong and Shanghai – CHI Residences.

Within the first few years, CHI Residences has grown to become one of Hong Kong’s leading boutique serviced apartment brands with fourth properties offering luxury studios and apartments. The latest development in the bustling district of Wan Chai with 107 apartments was opened in 2017. The Morais’ active development strategy will see another new property in near future.

CHI Residences has been recognized as a leading brand in the industry, and has received awards from Hong Kong’s Most Valuable Companies Services Award, China Property Award, Tripadvisor, Hotels.com, Booking.com and World Luxury Hotel Award.
